MID-CAROLINA AHEC, INC.

Presents

BIOTERRORISM AWARENESS TRAINING

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO PREPARE FOR THE UNTHINKABLE

This program is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration

Grant number 1T01HP01418

What would you do?

Flu-like symptoms in July ... is it just an early case of flu or is it

  • West Nile Virus?
  • Anthrax?
  • Plague?

Can you quell patient concerns if ricin is found at your local post office?

What does a widened mediastinum mean to you?

Do you know your professional role if a crowded building or bridge collapses?

What is a "push package"?

Even though bioterrorism is unthinkable or seems unlikely, the same patterns of response to a terrorist event are needed in times of natural disasters, epidemics and accidental catastrophes.

Don't miss this multifaceted and multidisciplinary opportunity to participate in a statewide program for bioterrorism and disaster preparedness training.

Please contact your local AHEC office for additional information.

Risks in South Carolina:

  • Five nuclear power facilities are located in the state.
  • Fourth busiest container port is in Charleston.
  • Charleston Air Force Base and its C-17 airplanes are major transporters for soldiers and supplies.
  • Traces of ricin were found in a post office in the upstate.
  • Charleston has a 9/11 terrorist and a new enemy combatant jailed in the Naval Depot brig.

"We, along with our colleagues in pediatrics, general internal medicine, and other medical specialties represent the first line of defense and the cornerstone of defense against bioterrorism."

Testimony of Jonathan L. Temte, M.D., Ph.D., to the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness and Response, Select Committee on Homeland Security.
